Jeff Bocaccio's Perspective on HDMI

Jeff Bocaccio

I’m a hardware guy, so for me HDMI has provided the necessary tools to design and engineer A/V products with capabilities that we never really had before. Besides the robust bandwidth options available with HDMI, upgrades to the interface just allow us to build future products with even better specifications. Being backwards compatible allows our past designs to continue to operate to their potential while at the same time new technologies can be implemented.

In the installer community HDMI has been recognize as something of a villain, and that’s a huge mistake. As with any newer technology there is an adaptation period for both product manufactures and users. This type of High Speed Digital Signaling is here to stay no mater what format it is so the need to learn and understand it is mandatory. It has the potential of functioning better than anything we ever had before.

I do educational presentations all over the country leaving many installers either calling or mailing me when they have their problems. What many product makers fail to realize is these people are working in all types of different envoirment from sub zero temperature conditions to attics that can be as high as 130 degrees, and the last thing they want is for something not to work. They will sometimes ask me if they should just go back to an analog signal envoirment. What I tell them is that there will be a day where they will not have that to fall back on. We are currently working on next generation’s systems that will take advantage of the new potentials HDMI has to offer. They had better educate themselves now rather then later to be able to handle these more advanced systems. As long as everyone stays with the program there is no reason for any problems to exist.

In the calls and emails I get, the overall trend is very positive. Increasingly, they are getting the job done, and feeling more comfortable about it. I’m really ecstatic about the success of this, it’s really working. I’m seeing more and more good results, fewer and fewer bad results. Bad stuff still happens, but the good side is increasing dramatically, and it’s great to see that. It makes me feel that what we’re doing is really working.
